Walk the talk

April, Tuesday 27th, 2010. Filed under: Christian Character Christian Life For Ministry Leaders

Growing up I have always heard people say Don’t just talk the talk, walk the walk.. They would always say this to encourage others to live what they believe. As I read the book of Titus this morning, I realized that this has been an age old problem amongst the people of God.

In Titus 2:10, Paul states:

For there are many rebellious people, mere talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision group.

In those days, there was a divide amongst the people of God. The Circumcision group were those who were gung-ho about the law but they were not displaying the grace and transformation that comes from a personal relationship with Christ. Paul goes on to describe these individuals as follows:

They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good. - Titus 2:16

As Christians, it is not enough to be knowledgeable or booksmart. God is looking for a generation that will not just read his Word, but will live it on a regular basis. God is not looking for those who just speak of him with their lips, but those who praise Him with their lives. God cannot be mocked. Though those who hear us may be fooled by our intellect, God sees the heart and knows the lives we live when no one is watching.

We can act holy, but the Bible calls for us to BE HOLY. Our thoughts, what we wear, where we go, how we treat others, etc. all of these are testaments to our faith. You cannot effectively minister to a neighbor about God’s love if you just cursed them out because their dog trampled on your precious rose bed. People judge your actions and if they do not align with the words coming out of your mouth, they will not take your counsel seriously.

Let us take Paul’s advice in Titus 2:7

In everything set them an example by DOING what is good. In your teachings show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.

Today, commit to setting an example for those around you. Let them see the God in you through the life you live. Show them Jesus in your walk and your talk. It won’t be easy, neither will it happen overnight. However, if you keep holding on and trying daily, it will become easier and will eventually become your nature. Won’t it be beautiful to be a Christian by nature?

Memory Text:

For I am the LORD your God; sanctify yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. – Leviticus 11:44

Prayer Prompt:
Lord, thank you for reminding me that you not only want me to talk the talk but to also walk the walk. Teach me to be holy as you are holy and help me to strive daily to be an example to those around me.
