I’d rather be a fool
This morning I started reading the first letter sent to the Corinthians by the Apostle Paul. In just the first three chapters, I realized that there was a theme going on. The theme that Paul drove home was that human wisdom is considered foolishness to God. A truly wise person is one that seeks the wisdom of God which can only come by the Holy Spirit.
Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a “fool” so that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. – 1 Corinthians 3:18-19 (NIV)
As I continued reading, I pondered on the number of sermons that were so eloquently written but held no power. By power I am not referring to hype and noise, I am referring to life changing power. When one’s ministry is built on Jesus Christ, it will have a lasting effect on all who come through its doors. How? Because it is the Spirit of God that convicts and moves. When your ministry is in alignment with the Spirit, souls will be won because they will see the message of the cross when they look at you.
So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. – 1 Corinthians 3:7 (NIV)
Not only does the Spirit of God draw souls, the growth of any Christ-centered ministry solely relies on the Spirit of the Most High. Unfortunately, many of us think it is the amount of degrees that we have amassed that fits us for service. No matter how much intellect is fitted into that dissertation that you call a sermon, if it isn’t based on God’s truth and led by the Holy Spirit, you may get reactions but no lasting transformations. Your words, theories, etc cannot convict anyone of God’s love. It is only by the Spirit that someone will come to know Christ.
In this day and age many have stood up and boldly declared that there is no God. I could never understand how they can say such a thing. But in 1 Corinthians 2, Paul explains that in order to understand the things of God, we must have the Spirit of God. So, without the Spirit it’s all just foolishness. The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. – 1 Corinthians 2:14 (NIV) This scripture helps us realize that whenever we are plan on witnessing to others, we need to ask God for His Spirit.
Believers are a special people. We believe in things that defy scientific theories. When we try to apply logic to our faith, it doesn’t always make sense. Despite it all, one thing is certain – the love of God is real. Therefore, whether man considers me a philosopher or downright illogical fool. I am holding on to the truth placed on my heart by the Spirit. God loves me. Jesus Died for me. He rose up from the dead. I am saved through His Blood. He is coming back for me and I am going to be with Him for ETERNITY. If that makes me a fool than so be it, but I know that in God’s eyes I am wise and that is all the acknowledgment I need.

When I think of where I could have been if the God didn’t take hold of me, I don’t mind being considered a fool. I’d rather be a fool at the foot of the cross than to be a hell-bound billionaire. I’d rather be a fool with my name in the book of life than be a first class passenger on the damnation express. Man’s wisdom didn’t die on the cross for me – but Christ did.
Memory Text:
By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ – 1 Corinthians 3:10-11 (NIV)
Prayer Prompt:
Lord, thank you for the gift of the Spirit. Help me to walk, talk and live in the Spirit at all times so that others may come to know you and I will always be in alignment with your will.
