All I want for Christmas

December, Wednesday 22nd, 2010. Filed under: Christian Life Walk with Him Wednesday

One of my favorite medleys to hear to during the holiday season is “All I want for Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey. As I walk the streets of Manhattan, you can hear the bustling of shoppers coming in and out of local shops hunting for the perfect Christmas gifts. I too am one of those shoppers looking for sentimental gifts that my loved ones can both use and will also appreciate. As I shop and reflect on the season. I wonder if we truly understand the gift we received from God millenniums ago. He sent his son to this world knowing that the gift he would send so beautifully wrapped, would be spat on and crucified. Then, as if things couldn’t get any worse, his selfless sacrifice would be turned into a commercialized holiday that many only see as a season for gift giving.

Have we forgotten the true gift of Christmas?

My family and I came together last Christmas and watched the movie Mary. As I sat there and watched the number of times Joseph had to saddle up and take Baby Jesus and Mary to safety, I wondered how blind the people of God were. Right in the midst of them lay the Savior that they were all waiting for, but they just couldn’t see him. What truly grabbed my attention was that three men from totally different backgrounds were able to decipher that a king was born on this day. How is it that Israel still missed it?

1. Were they too caught up living this life that they forgot they were waiting for a king?

2. Were they so stuck in their traditions that they weren’t flexible enough to allow God to do a NEW thing?

Whatever the reason, are we at risk of repeating history? I pray not. This Christmas I want to give God a gift and that gift is “Thank You”. God doesn’t ask much from us, but He still gives everything to us. Let us be grateful for more than just the gifts we receive this season. Let’s thank God for sending his son to earth to save you and me.

May God give us the wisdom we need to follow his will in this life and prepare us to live eternally with him in the next!

Memory Text:

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6

Prayer Prompt:
Lord, THANK YOU for your awesome gift. Help me to always remember that you loved me enough to send your only begotten Son to die in my place.

This Christmas Lord my simple gift to you isThank You
