By day and by Night
Yesterday’s reading from my 60-day overview of the Bible was taken from the book of Exodus. We read the story of the Israelites and their massive exodus from Egypt. The Bible says that there were six-hundred thousand men besides women and children. It is almost safe to say that about a million or so Israelites were freed from the shackles of Egypt. I sat there and tried to picture how amazing this scene was. Can you imagine millions of people leaving a country all at once? After 430 years of slavery, the Israelites were a free people and were about to embark on a new journey with God.
As I continued to read the story, I came across a part of the passage that really caught my attention.
By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or by night. Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people. – Exodus 13:21-22
I thought to myself, How awesome it was to know that God was leading the way? How amazing it was to see him take the lead by night and by day? It is truly reassuring to know that this same God that led his people through the desert, is the same God that is leading our lives. Just as God made himself present on their journey through a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, God is also making himself present through the workings of the Holy Spirit. God promises to never leave us alone. We may shun him, we may push him away, we may forget to speak to him for weeks on end, but he promises to keep us under the shadow of his wings. He promises to hear our cries even when we have sunk ourselves so low.
Jeremiah 33:3 says:
Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.
1 John 5:14 says:
….Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us
I feel blessed to know that God is leading me on this journey called life. Growing up one of my favorite french hymns was “Flots Mugissants” (it still is).
Flots mugissants, flots en furie, (Turbulent Waters, Raging Waters)
Entourez-moi, je n’ai pas peur : (They’re surrounding me, but I am not afraid)
Quoi qu’il en soit, paix infinie, (whatever it may be, I have an infinite peace)
Puisqu’à la barre est mon Sauveur. (for at the helm of this ship is my Lord)
Refrain
Le gouvernail, (bis) de ma nacelle, (The rudder of my Ship)
Oh! quel repos (bis) Jésus le tient, (Oh what sweet rest knowing Jesus is navigating)
Si dans la nuit (bis) mon coeur chancelle, (If in the night, my heart begins to fail me)
Avec Jésus (bis) oui tout est bien. (I know with Jesus all will be well)
Yes my friend, today I want to remind you that Jesus is navigating our ships. He is at the rudder. He is the captain of all captains. When the waters rage and the winds blow, remember that Jesus has taken the wheel and will lead you all the way. Like the song reminds us, Avec Jésus oui tout est bien. With Jesus all is well!
