Walk the Waters
I got my new kindle on Monday and immediately started downloading samples of books. One of the books I downloaded was “The Confident Woman” by Joyce Meyer. The first devotional was taken from the story of Peter and Jesus. It amazes me that out of all the disciples on the boat, Peter was the ONLY one who was willing to venture off the boat and walk on the water. All too often, we as Christians seem to forget that we are serving a living, miracle working and loving God. We sing of his goodness, we preach of his goodness, we testify of his goodness, but do we really KNOW of his goodness?
The Christian walk is a walk that requires – FAITH! The Bible defines faith as:
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
- Hebrews 11:1 (NASB)
What I love about this translation is part b “THE CONVICTION of things not seen.” Now that’s just deep! How can one be CONVICTED in something that one does not see? That’s FAITH! Everything about this screamed CRAZY! How am I suppose to walk on water?Peter may have been thinking. Yet, he stepped out of the boat and onto the water. I am sure God was up there dancing and cheering! Yes Peter, take that step and I will do the rest.
How many of us are still hiding in the boat? How long do you plan dreaming and wishing that God will use you? How is he suppose to use you when you have made yourself nice and comfy in the boat? I truly believe that the body of Christ can do so much more than we are currently doing if only we would just STEP OUT OF THE BOAT. Unfortunately, we have become so complacent and comfortable that we just can’t phantom doing anything new. Even worse, we have placed God in a cage and erroneously have told ourselves that he can not do anything new. It’s as though we are saying that he only did miracles then and can’t do anything now.
Jesus said unto his disciples:
Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.
- John 14:12 (NASB)
How amazing is that? Jesus who made a crippled walk, caused the blind to see, healed a woman from more that a decade of bleeding, died and ROSE again, this same JESUS said that if we believe in him and the works that he does, WE WILL DO GREATER WORKS THAN THESE. WOW! Can you imagine what the church is capable of if we would but have that faith that Jesus is speaking of? Amazingly, he is not even talking about a huge amount of faith. He is simply asking for that “Mustard Seed” FAITH (Luke 17:6). The faith that will allow us to move the mountains in our lives. Have you ever seen a mustard seed?
It’s time for you and I to step out of the boat and walk on the waters. Jesus waits for us and he is cheering us on. The Bible tells us that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13). Is there something that God has been calling you to do that you’ve been avoiding? Are you comfortable in that boat of yours so much so that you can’t give Jesus a chance to show you a NEW thing? Whatever it may be that is keeping you from a new experience with the Lord, isn’t it time you just cut it off? There is nothing in this world that should be strong enough to keep you from following God wherever he may lead. This past Sunday, Pastor Bowles Taitt reminded us that there shouldn’t be anything more important than seeking a relationship with God. NOTHING! That truly hit home for me. No matter how many possessions or relationships we acquire here on this earth, they are all temporal. When Christ returns, it’s just going to be you and Jesus! Is anything worth you losing your crown of glory?
Let’s make it a habit for us to exercise our faith in everything we do. Once we begin to walk the walk of faith and trust God even when we don’t see the path, we will begin to accomplish amazing things to his glory. The first step to a new habit is the DECISION to start. Let’s make faith a HABIT! What a life we will have once we do.
I pray that we will work on our faith and come to the realization that God can do so much more through us if we would but give him the chance.
Memory Text:
Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
Prayer Prompt:
Lord, help me to have the courage to step out in faith and walk on the waters. Show me where you would like me to go and strengthen me for the journey…
