Where did Sunday come into play?

January, Wednesday 5th, 2011. Filed under: Bible Answers

Sunday came into effect in the early church. When Christ ascended into heaven, the early Christians continued to keep the Sabbath at the Synagogue on Saturday but, because the Jews still didn’t accept Christ as the Messiah, they also had to meet on Sundays to partake in communion and also as a commemoration of the resurrection of Christ. (Acts 20:7) For quite some time Christians kept the Saturday-Sabbath and held communion services on Sunday. Then, the unbelieving Jews began to persecute them and kicked them out of the synagogues. So they fled and continued to meet in private homes on Sundays to worship and break bread. Since then, many Christians continue to observe Sunday as did their forefathers.

Now some will say that it began with Constantine who put out an edict that no work should be done on the day of the sun. This edict is in fact true. However, the early church began observing the first day as a day of partaking in communion long before emperor Constantine came along with his edict as seen in Acts 20:7.
