Why does the church exist?
God and the Church
The church is the body of believers. They are those who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.(Revelation 12:17) The church is not a club of saints but a haven for sinners. It is a place where souls can come together to get to know God and to develop a deeper relationship with him. The church should be a place of edification and instruction. It is to be a place where sinners come in to learn and worship God, then go out to serve and save others. The church is to be the light of the world (Matthew 5:14) and should share this light with everyone. It is not to practice exclusivity but inclusion. All should be welcomed into the temple of God. Their immoral sins/lifestyle should not be glorified or tolerated. The church is to help point each individual in the right direction. However, the church must realize that it is the Holy Spirit who will convict them of their wrong and cause them to change their ways.
For when we brought you the Good News, it was not only with words but also with power, for the Holy Spirit gave you full assurance that what we said was true. And you know of our concern for you from the way we lived when we were with you. -1 Thessalonians 1:5 (NLT)
The church is not to try to do the work of the Holy Spirit. Our sole job is to point to the light and help them walk in the light. However, it is God alone that will help them to stay in the light. The church must then support them in prayer and believe God to complete his perfect work in every believer. We, the church, are here to help one another. We are each members of one body (Romans 12:4-5) and by supporting one another, we can help each other along life’s journey.
